Traditional Chinese Cupping Therapy

The Cupping Massage (or acupuncture cupping) I practice is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is also known as traditional cupping, Chinese cupping, cupping massage or Chinese cupping therapy. Dry cupping methods include vacuum cupping & fire cupping.

What To Expect From Chinese Cupping Therapy

I use either suction cupping (vacuum cupping), fire cupping which is gentler or moving cupping. Traditionally the cups were made of bamboo but I use glass cups for the TCM cupping. I only practice dry cupping massage.

I mainly use vacuum or suction cupping therapy as a adjunct to acupuncture. Vacuum or fire cupping therapy is a very effective treatment of expelling colds and flu, sore throats and coughs, to relieve muscle stiffness and aches and strengthen the lower back. Fire or vacuum cupping therapy is also a deeply relaxing treatment.

Like Acupuncture, Cupping is also a tool that can be tailored to the needs of each individual. The desired effect will depend on many factors such as the type of cupping technique applied – the speed of application of the cups, the strength of the suction within the cups, whether the technique is stationary or moving or sliding cupping, the way suction is created inside the cup – either through fire or a suction applicator and whether the cups are place over needles or moxibustion. This is why I also do a full assessment of your underlying constitution and symptoms including Chinese pulse and tongue diagnosis.

Vacuum Cupping or Suction Cupping is created by applying specifically designed glass jars of various sizes to areas of the skin. The air is sucked out of the cup, creating a vacuum..

Fire Cupping The fire is used to create a vacuum inside the glass cupping jar. The cup is applied to the skin. An area of skin inside the glass cup is drawn upwards helping to move any stagnation & expel toxins For hygiene reasons.

Moving Cupping A small amount of oil is applied to the part of the body – usually the back or shoulders The cups are applied and moved along the spine to create a deep massage sensation, moving stagnation in the muscles.

Why is Cupping so Effective?

Chinese Cupping Therapy, Fire Cupping, Suction Cupping – Central London, Kentish Town, Belsize Park, Camden, London NW3, London NW5
  • Cupping Therapy increases blood flow, speeding up metabolism in the soft tissues – increasing available nutrients and cleansing toxins, pesticides, acids, pathogenic factors (viruses) stagnant blood and lymph.
  • Cupping Therapy promotes healing through pain reduction and deep relaxation depressing the "fight or flight" stress reaction.
  • The pulling effect created by the suction inside the cups deeply massages muscles pulling soft tissues away from the bone structure eliminating knots and muscle spasms, helping the body to structurally realign itself in a similar way to deep tissue work.
  • I only practice dry cupping as blood loss can weaken your body's vital energy and I don't believe it is necessary to open the skin as it also forms a vital part of our immune systems being a barrier to the entry of bacteria and viruses – after cupping has stimulated the lymphatic system to clear away the toxins.

My Personal Experience Of Cupping Therapy

I felt myself coming down with a flu when I was studying for my Acupuncture BSc – I was tired and run down and had burning and itchy sore throat and was sneezing and shivering. The following day to my amazement - my symptoms had gone! I also suffered from low back ache, sometimes with sciatic pain in my leg. I tried cupping and the pain was relieved but returned. After a few more cupping treatments my pain had gone completely. As a result of my personal relief I have had from cupping I trained in cupping and now practise this complementary therapy on my clients.
